This fun and historic survivor is well-crafted of solid mahogany with dovetail joints and slide lid. It bears the hand painted label: Leaver's Orchestra Harp Strings. Leaver's Orchestra was the go-to entertainment in the janesville/Evanston area in the first quarter of the 20th century. Proms, dance clubs, and social galas could all boast of having enjoyed their music. The group disbanded before WWII, so this is a hard to come by souvenir of a somewhat more refined social era in Wisconsin. This colorful and naive oil on canvas seascape with rocky coast and lighthouse keeper's house measures 16" x 20" and is signed lower left, Inge. The sky is filled with brooding clouds and the foreground is defined by golden boulders and the paint is applied with vigor and impasto. It is VERY DIRTY with stable paint and no holes or tears.
