Antique Painting Italian Boy Musician Accordion Vittorio for sale in Huntington, IN

1 of 1
This thoroughly charming and impeccably painted late 1800's oil on canvas depicts a poor Ragazzo street musician singing a traditional plaintive song of Tuscany and playing his accordion. He lifts his head to reach a high note his dark, soulful eyes gazing wistfully, apparently transported from his common surroundings by the music he is making. The work measures 45" x 25 3/8" framed; 39 1/2" x 19 1/2" actual and is signed lower right V Rignano. Vittorio Rignano (1860-1916) was born in Livorno and studied law at the University of Pisa eventually receiving a degree. His first love was painting and he began to paint as an untrained amateur (mostly landscapes) until he undertook studies with Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908) a noted Tuscan landscape and figure painter. In the 1880's Rignano began exhibiting paintings of the poor children of his native Tusany which led to awards at exhibitions and popularity with an international clientele. He died in Florence at the age of 56. This work has undergone extensive conservation with re-lining stabilizing scattered craquelure and minor scattered in-painting in the background, mostly in the upper corners. It has a clean, even varnish layer with some scratch losses apparent in the lower right near the signature. The rendering of the fabrics and textures of the subject's native costume is captivating as are the colors and details of his complex instrument; his face is unforgettable. The work is housed in a mid-20th century gesso and pine European frame with rich details and nice antique gold metal leaf finish. Its stretcher retains an early 20th century label from Carson Pierie Scott Artistic Framing. WEARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS.
